Paisley's St James Medical Centre closure

Paisley's St James Medical Centre is set to close on 31 March 2022.

Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) has taken this decision following a period of consultation that considered a range of potential options for the future of the GP Practice.

All patients currently registered at St James' will be allocated to other local Practices to ensure continuation of services - although following the transfer, all patients will retain the right to register with any other practice if they are not satisfied with their allocation.

Registered patients should continue to make appointments at and will be able to collect repeat prescriptions from St James Medical Centre up until the date of transfer on 1 April 2022.

The St James Street Practice has the second lowest number of registered patients in Renfrewshire and for many years was managed by a single GP.

Due to various sustainability and workforce issues, the GP submitted their formal resignation in September 2021. The contract subsequently ended at the end of 2021. To maintain services for registered patients in the short term, the practice is currently being managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) staff.

In considering long-term options to provide primary medical services from the practice in the future, Renfrewshire HSCP has consulted on a range of factors, which has resulted in this unfortunate decision.

Letters have been sent to all registered patients advising them of the closure date and next steps, including the allocation process.

Three afternoons in February have also been made available for patients with queries, or concerns to discuss any specific issues. Due to the ongoing pandemic, two of the sessions will offer appointments via remote videoconferencing with the third being socially distanced in person.

Doctor Stuart Sutton, Clinical Director at Renfrewshire HSCP commented: "It is regrettable that we have had to take this decision but having reviewed all possible alternatives there was no other sustainable long-term solution. Patient safety and accessibility of GP services is our priority concern, and I am confident that this course of action will provide the best outcome for patients currently registered with the St James Practice."
